When I visited Rockhampton in the past, I stayed at the free camp next to the pub in the nearby town of Bouldercombe. The pub closed just over a year ago, and there was some doubt about the future of the campground. Step forward local man Len who, with the approval of the pub owner, has not only maintained the site, but improved it by adding a sink and a shower, and encouraging the grass to grow back. On top of all that, Len is a very sociable chap, and he enjoys a chat and welcoming people from around the world to this little place. Len also enjoys camping, so he tows his van the 500 metres from his house every month or two and spends a couple of nights here. Now, Len's van is no ordinary van. He offered me a guided tour, and I was amazed to see that his bedroom is actually twice the size of the living area of my van! Len's van is nine metres long, and he tows it with a very handsome tow truck, which is powered by a 7.3 litre V8 diesel motor. Len camps in a big way! He also cooks a mean burger. I am very thankful for Len's efforts, and it has been a pleasure to get to know him a little.
